Ah, the sweet rewards of using credit!

Not only do you get immediate gratification with the buy now-pay later plastic, but now, many credit cards offer rewards and incentives for using their card to make purchases. You can get cash back, or gift cards, or ‘reward points’ that you can spend on merchandise or services from various merchants. There are also cards that allow you to designate your ‘cash back’ points to a charity – sometimes called affinity cards – and those that put your cash back into a special savings account for college.

People who have bad credit have to pay more in interest rates when financing homes, automobiles, and other assets. Also, those with bad credit will often find it difficult to get approved for credit cards with reasonable rates. The situation can be very frustrating for people who are looking to rebuild their credit. I frequently receive emails from consumers who are frustrated and don’t know how to go about correctly rebuilding their credit. The first thing I tell them is to understand the situation they find themselves in and to realize that they simply will not qualify for “good credit” credit card. By this, I mean you have to be rational and realize the only credit cards available to you are those for people with the credit profile you have. These are often called “bad credit” credit cards. These cards are offered with higher APR rates than regular cards. It is extremely important to read the fine print when applying for these type of cards in order to avoid excessive fees.
